Abortion and Domestic Violence
Research shows that women who had abortions were more likely to report a history of sexual abuse and to have experienced stressful events in adulthood, such as miscarriage, physical violence or being in a life-threatening accident. The US researchers noted that women who experience domestic violence are more likely to abort compared to women who are not in violent situations. A New Zealand study found that one in 10 women reported being abused while pregnant and that abused women were 2.5 times more likely to undergo an abortion compared to women who were not abused.

Abortion link to other illnesses
Sleep disorders - 2006 study found that women who experienced abortion were more likely to be treated for sleep disorders or disturbances compared to women who gave birth. The data showed that, up to four years later, women who underwent abortions were more likely to be treated for sleep disorders afterwards compared to those who gave birth.

Breast Cancer – At the beginning of pregnancy there are great increases in certain hormone levels that support pregnancy. In response to these changes, breast cells divide and mature into cells able to produce milk. Abortion causes an abrupt fall in hormone levels, leaving the breast cells in an immature state. These immature cells can more easily become cancer cells. Women who have an abortion before their first full-term pregnancy have a 50% increased risk of developing breast cancer while those who have an abortion after their first full-term pregnancy have a 30% increased risk.

Mental Health Problems – Women who report negative reactions to abortion are at higher risk for mental health problems. More than 85 percent of women who aborted reported at least one negative reaction to abortion, such as sorrow, grief, regret, or disappointment. The risk of mental disorders among women who had negative reactions to abortion was 40 to 80 percent higher than among women who didn’t abort.

Psychiatric Disorders Linked to Abortion for Fetal Anomalies – A study of women who experienced serious complications during pregnancy found that women who undergo late abortions due to fetal anomalies are more likely to experience psychiatric disorders compared to women who give birth prematurely. A German study showed that 22 percent of women were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder after abortion, compared to 18 percent of women who gave birth to a baby with very low-birth-weight and 6 percent of women who had a healthy full-term baby.

Substance Abuse – Many women who have experienced abortion have unresolved emotional issues related to their abortion. Substance abuse can provide an easily accessible way to self-medicate their pain and numb their emotions. Researchers fond that those women who aborted their first pregnancy were 3.9 times more likely to engage in drug or alcohol abuse that those who have never had an abortion. During their study, they found that 60% admitted to increased alcohol use following their abortion—they attributed their abuse to stress related to the abortion.

Abortion and Suicide
Deaths from suicide, accidents and homicide are 248% higher in the year following an abortion, according to a new 13-year study of the entire population of women in Finland. Researchers also found that majority of the extra deaths among women who had abortions were due to suicide. The suicide rate among women who had abortions was six times higher than that of women who had given birth in the prior year and double that of women who had miscarriages. Perhaps one reason for the strong abortion/suicide link exists in the fact that in many ways abortion is like suicide. A person who threatens suicide is actually crying out for help. So are women who contemplate abortion. Both are in a state of despair. Both are lonely. Both feel faced by insurmountable odds.

The Epidemic of Forced Abortions
The epidemic of coerced, unwanted abortions is rarely reported. Yet every week, thousands of girls and women face threats and abuse from people who want them to abort without regard for their own feelings or desires. Research shows that 30 to 60 percent of women having abortions feel pressured to do so by other persons. This intense pressure to abort can come from husbands, parents, doctors, partners, counselors, or close friends and family. They may threaten or blackmail a woman into abortion. Coercion can escalate to violence. Women who resist abortion haven been beaten, tortured and killed.
